Eels - I need some sleep

I need some sleep.
You can’t go on like this.
I try counting sheep,
But there’s one I always miss.

Everyone says, "I’m getting down too low"
Everyone says, "You just gotta let it go"
You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go

I need some sleep
time to put the old horse down
I’m in too deep
and the wheels keep spinning round

Everyone says, "I’m getting down too low"
Everyone says, "You just gotta let it go"
You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go

You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go

Not much of a lyrics there, but a beautiful song from the Shrek 2 soundtrack.

Enya - Only time

Who can say where the road goes,
Where the day flows?
Only time...

And who can say if your love grows,
As your heart chose?
Only time...

(chants)

Who can say why your heart sighs,
As your love flies?
Only time...

And who can say why your heart cries,
When your love dies?
Only time...

(chants)

Who can say when the roads meet,
That love might be,
In your heart.

And who can say when the day sleeps,
The moon still keeps on moving
If the night keeps all your heart?
Night keeps all your heart...

(extended chants)

Who can say if your love grows,
As your heart chose?
Only time...

And who can say where the road goes,
Where the day flows?
Only time...

Who knows?
Only time...

Who knows?
Only time...

Only time -- is like a chant which mesmerizes you. The music, the lyrics fills your mind -- an almost hypnotic effect. This one is from the soundtrack of Sweet November, I am not sure. But definitely a great song!

Elton John - Friends never say goodbye

There isn't much I haven't shared
With you along the road
And through it all there'd always be
Tomorrow's episode
Suddenly that isn't true
There's another avenue
Beckoning, the great divide
Ask no questions, take no side
Who's to say who's right or wrong
Whose course is braver run
Will ever be, ask one

What is done has been done for the best
Though the mist in my eyes might suggest
Just a little confusion about what I'll lose
But if I started over I know I would choose
The same joy the same sadness each step of the way
That fought me and tought me that friends never say
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye

Suddenly that isn't true
There's another avenue
Beckoning, the great divide
I would choose
The same joy the same sadness each step of the way
That fought me and taught me that friends never say
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye

It's from the soundtrack of the animated classic 'Road to El Dorodo'. What a lyrics! Elton John's songs always have good lyrics and this one fits the theme of the movie like, as they say, the glove. It is said that songs are bad poetry, not this one.

Goo Goo Dolls - Sympathy

Stranger than your sympathy
And this is my apology
I killed myself from the inside out
And all my fears have pushed you out

And I wished for things that I don’t need
(all I wanted)
And what I chased won’t set me free
(all I wanted)
And I get scared but I’m not crawlin’ on my knees

Oh, yeah
Everything’s all wrong, yeah
Everything’s all wrong, yeah
Where the hell did I think I was?

And stranger than your sympathy
Take these things, so I don’t feel
I’m killing myself from the inside out
And now my head’s been filled with doubt

We’re taught to lead the life you choose
(all I wanted)
You know your love’s run out on you
(all I wanted)
And you can’t see when all your dreams aren’t coming true

Oh, yeah
It’s easy to forget, yeah
When you choke on the regrets, yeah
Who the hell did I think I was?

And stranger than your sympathy
And all these thoughts you stole from me
And I’m not sure where I belong
And no where’s home and no more wrong

And I was in love with things I tried to make you believe I was
And I wouldn’t be the one to kneel before the dreams I wanted
And all the dark and all the lies were all the empty things disguised as me

Mmm, yeah
Stranger than your sympathy
Stranger than your sympathy
Mmm hmmm mmm

Goo goo dolls, a weird group name -- but amazing songs!
This one I like simply for its tune and the way it is sung. Eg the sort of interludes between the main verses (all I wanted ... etc), that adds a lot to the impact of the song!

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Road Trippin'

Road trippin’ with my two favorite allies
Fully loaded we got snacks and supplies
It’s time to leave this town
It’s time to steal away
Let’s go get lost
Anywhere in the u.s.a.
Let’s go get lost
Let’s go get lost

Blue you sit so pretty
West of the one
Sparkles light with yellow icing
Just a mirror for the sun
Just a mirror for the sun
Just a mirror for the sun

These smiling eyes are just a mirror for

So much as come before those battles lost and won
This life is shining more forever in the sun
Now let us check our heads
And let us check the surf
Staying high and dry’s
More trouble than it’s worth
In the sun

Just a mirror for the sun
Just a mirror for the sun
Just a mirror for the sun

These smiling eyes are just a mirror for

In big sur we take some time to linger on
We three hunky dory’s got our snakefinger on
Now let us drink the stars
It’s time to steal away
Let’s go get lost
Right here in the u.s.a

Blue you sit so pretty
West of the one
Sparkles light with yellow icing
Just a mirror for the sun
Just a mirror for the sun
Just a mirror for the sun

These smiling eyes are just a mirror for
These smiling eyes are just a mirror for
Your smiling eyes are just a mirror for

RHCP's 'Californication' is famous, I don't know how many have heard this one ...
I like the guitar rings in the background and the tune. Especially the way they sing 'let's go get lost' .. and 'mirror for the sun' parts ...
Nice song!

Pink Floyd - Comfortably numb

Hello.
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone home?

Come on, now.
I hear you’re feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.

Relax.
I need some information first.
Just the basic facts:
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can’t explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.

Ok.
Just a little pinprick. [ping]
There’ll be no more --aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.

Can you stand up?
I do believe it’s working. good.
That’ll keep you going for the show.
Come on it’s time to go.

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

I was in Mahabaleshwar on a management training program, when a colleague of mine (a good guitarist and a bigtime Pink floyd fan) played this song on guitar. I learned a lot from him about guitar playing.

This one is totally a lyrics-favorite, yeah it's a great tune and good guitar ... but it just had to be for such a good lyrics, you know what I mean? The second verse where the drug is talking back to the person -- now that's Pink Floyd! Wow! Now I haven't taken cocaine or any those kind of drugs, but this is how it would feel I'm sure. ( Don't worry, not trying it :D )

Dire Straits - So far away

Here I am again in this mean old town
And you’re so far away from me
And where are you when the sun goes down
You’re so far away from me

So far away from me
So far I just can’t see
So far away from me
You’re so far away from me

I’m tired of being in love and being all alone
When you’re so far away from me
I’m tired of making out on the telephone
And you’re so far away from me

So far away from me
So far I just can’t see
So far away from me
You’re so far away from me

I get so tired when I have to explain
When you’re so far away from me
See you been in the sun and I’ve been in the rain
And you’re so far away from me

So far away from me
So far I just can’t see
So far away from me
You’re so far away from me

I strated listening to Dire Straits because I wanted to see why Sachin Tendulakar, the world's greatest batsman (cricketer), likes them so much. And I was instantly hooked on to their music. This one has the typical Dire Straits signature guitar in it. A repeating catchy rhythm and just simply great lyrics!

Counting crows - A long december

A long december and there’s reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can’t remember the last thing that you said as you were leaven’
Now the days go by so fast

And it’s one more day up in the canyons
And it’s one more night in hollywood
If you think that I could be forgiven...i wish you would

The smell of hospitals in winter
And the feeling that it’s all a lot of oysters, but no pearls
All at once you look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches to a girl

And it’s one more day up in the canyons
And it’s one more night in hollywood
If you think you might come to california...i think you should

Drove up to hillside manor sometime after two a.m.
And talked a little while about the year
I guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower,
Makes you talk a little lower about the things you could not show her
And it’s been a long december and there’s reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last

I can’t remember all the times I tried to tell my myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass
And it’s one more day up in the canyon
And it’s one more night in hollywood
It’s been so long since I’ve seen the ocean...i guess I should

This one is superb. Very meaningful yet simple lyrics. The tune is sort of undulating with the key, and the rhythm is a nice steady one. Couting crows have done an amazing job with this one. I especially love the lines where it goes 'I guess the winter makes you ...' and how it merges into 'and it's been a ...'.
Gloomy yes. But a must-listen.

R.E.M - At my most beautiful

(buck/mills/stipe)

(chorus)
I’ve found a way to make you
I’ve found a way
A way to make you smile

I read bad poetry
Into your machine
I save your messages
Just to hear your voice
You always listen carefully
To awkward rhymes
You always say your name,
Like I wouldn’t know it’s you,
At your most beautiful

(repeat chorus)

At my most beautiful
I count your eyelashes, secretly
With every one, whisper I love you
I let you sleep
I know you’re closed eye watching me,
Listening
I thought I saw a smile

(repeat chorus)

( ref: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/r/r.e.m./113178.html )

Ok. Last one for today I promise. I just listened to it and couldn't help blogging abt it. Agreed it's awkward rhyme and rhythm, but it's beautiful! R.E.M at their most beautiful? You decide.

Creed - One last breath

Please come now I think I’m falling
I’m holding on to all I think is safe
It seems I found the road to nowhere
And I’m trying to escape
I yelled back when I heard thunder
But I’m down to one last breath
And with it let me say
Let me say

Hold me now
I’m six feet from the edge and I’m thinking
That maybe six feet
Ain’t so far down

I’m looking down now that it’s over
Reflecting on all of my mistakes
I thought I found the road to somewhere
Somewhere in his grace
I cried out heaven save me
But I’m down to one last breath
And with it let me say
Let me say

Hold me now
I’m six feet from the edge and I’m thinking
That maybe six feet
Ain’t so far down

Sad eyes follow me
But I still believe there’s something left for me
So please come stay with me
¡®cause I still believe there’s something left for you and me
For you and me
For you and me

Hold me now
I’m six feet from the edge and I’m thinking

Currently, this song is at the top of my favorites. It starts with a slow melancholic tune, and turns into still melancholic but a power-packed rock song. Listen to it if you haven't, you'll know what I mean. And yeah, awesome touching lyrics!

Nirvana - Come as you are

Come as you are, as you were
As I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend
As an old enemy
Take your time
Hurry up
The choice is yours
Don't be late
Take a rest
As a friend
As an old...

Memoria (x4)

Come, doused in mud
Soaked in bleach
As i want you to be
As a trend, as a friend
as an old...

Memoria (x4)

And i swear that i don't have a gun
No i don't have a gun
No i don't have a gun

Memoria (x4)

No i don't have a gun
And i swear that i don't have a gun
No i don't havea gun
No i don't have a gun
No i don't have a gun
No i don't have a gun

Memoria (x2)

Ah! The forever favorite Nirvana. I like 'come as you are' for it's simple rhythm, simple lyrics and the 'Nirvananess' of it. The song grows on you and it's damn fun to play it on an acoustic guitar!

What's this blog for?

I like many songs, for various reasons. Some I like for the music and some for the lyrics. Lyrics matters more I guess. There are so many songs out there that I like that I am losing track of it. I will try to post lyrics and some info for some of my favorites. I might throw in some song-appreciation if I feel like.

http://puredrivelling.blogspot.com/ already posts a 'lyrics for today' in each of the posts. This is sort of my way of taking it further.

So there. Enjoy music!
